Experience and Problems of Teaching of Nanai Language in the Institute of Peoples of the North, RSPU named after A.I. Hertzen

Zaksor, Liubov Zhorzhevna

Nanai language is taught at the department of Altaic Studies of the Institute of Peoples of the North, RSPU named after Herzen. From the 1930s educational literature and fiction have been published in Nanai language by publishing houses “Uchpedgiz”, “Prosveschenie”, “Drofa”, Khabarovsk book house, Khabarovsk Pedagogical Institute press. In the teaching process the folklore literature in Nanai language at hand, primarily, series of books «Нанайский фольклор» (“Nanai Folklore”) (Новосибирск: Наука, 1996) and «Материалы по нанайскому языку и фольклору» (“Materials on Nanai Language and Folklore”) by V.A. Avrorin (Л.: Наука, 1986) are widely used. At the lessons of the native language and native literature numerous books of Nanai writers and poets, as well as «Литература. Учебная хрестоматия на нанайском языке для 7–9 классов» (“Literature. Educational Reading-Book in Nanai Language for 7-9 Forms”) (СПб.: Просвещение, 2004) by А.S. Kile, «Хрестоматия для внекласского чтения в старших классах нанайских школ» (“Book for Extracurricular Reading in Higher Forms of Nanai Schools”) (СПб.: Просвещение, 2005) by L. Zh. Zaksor are used.

Electronic educational books were recorded on CD-ROM, including two volume “Грамматика нанайского языка” (“Grammar of Nanai Language”) by V.A. Avrorin, “Нанайско-русский словарь” (“Nanai-Russian Dictionary”) by S.N. Onenko (1980), “Нанайский язык в таблицах для начальных классов” (“Nanai Language in Tables for Elementary Forms”), “Грамматика нанайского языка для старших классов” (“Grammar of Nanai Language for Higher Forms”), “Нанайский язык. Теоретический курс. Часть 1. Учебное пособие для вузов и педучилищ” (“Nanai Language. Theoretical Course. Part 1. Manual for Universities and Pedagogical Vocational Schools”) by L.Zh. Zaksor. Recording of educational manuals on audiotapes with the use of teachers’ field materials started. Beyond field materials on Nanai there are authors’ records of poetic pieces and songs by Anna Petrovna Khodzher and Pongsa Konstantinovich Kile, songs of folk music groups of Nanayskiy, Amurskiy, Komsomolskiy and Solnechniy districs of Khabarovskiy Region. There are also video materials available for application in the process of teaching of the native language.

One of the problems arising in teaching is the lack of educational manuals on methods of teaching of the native language connected with the lack of specialists. Another serious problem is training of young teachers of native language in universities connected with housing shortage in relation to young specialists. The lack of higher education manuals on native literature and methods of teaching of native literature should also be stressed. In many northern regions there is a necessity for renewed work of advanced training courses for teachers of native languages held in the Institute of Peoples of the North.
