CHABYS-CHAPAN
A Shor Epic Story in Self-Record of V.E. Tannagashev

The epic story was recorded independently by Shor epic story teller, kaichy, Vladimir Egorovich Tannagashev (born in 1932) approximately in 2000. The original represented a text hand-written in a copybook in a volume of 59 manuscript pages without clear stichometry. In 2002 the story teller gave this self-record, along with some other texts, to D.A. Funk for examination and the following probable preparation for publication. The same year the originals were copied and returned to V.E. Tannagashev’s family archive.

The work on the manuscript of epic story “Chabys-Chapan” was in progress in 2003-2004. Some illegible or misspelt words were clarified in the presence of the story teller during expedition trips. In the process of preparation to the present electronic edition stichometry and modern orthographic rules were applied to the Shor text, where appropriate (with dialectal peculiarities of the teller’s language preserved).

V.E. Tannagashev adopted this epic story from story teller Prokopiy Nikanorovich Amzorov (1898-1971), well-known in the lower reaches of Mras River in the 1930-60s, and ejoying a reputation of kaichy Akkooke among Shor older generation.

As an independent piece of work, this text has never been recorded by researchers earlier.

This work supplemented with ethnolinguistic comments and translation into Russian will be published in the full version in a volume of Shor epic stories being prepared to publication in publishing house “Nauka” (Moscow).
